Artist recommendation of the week: Marcus Foster.
Marcus hails from London, and when he was twelve years old he was playing in blues clubs with fifty year old men. Now he’s touring all over the place, getting a degree in Sculpture on the side, and has become one of my favorite songwriters.
He plays mainly guitar, but in the track I’ve uploaded, Demons, he’s at a piano — it gave me chills the first time I heard it. He has a lyrical and vocal style that is just completely unexpected and soulful. He holds nothing back and he’s a bit of a nutcase, which is good because, well, all geniuses are a little nuts.
Marcus came to town this past winter and watching him was transfixing and heart-wrenching. Sometimes there are just people where you’re not sure if what you’re hearing is like, traditionally or theoretically correct, but you see the passion they have for it and that’s all that really counts, because you know that they mean what they’re doing with every ounce of their soul.
His first full-length album is getting finished right now. You can find his music on MySpace, or just search for him on YouTube, which is my favorite thing to do.
